Every day for six months of training before the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, I visualized crossing the finish line. I have heard so many people say that it was such an honor to hear Mike call their name as they crossed over the finish line and I finally got to experience it myself. It was truly magical. Now I am counting the days until his book is published. I have had the chance to preview a few chapters and I can tell you it’s going to be filled with unique insights, such heartfelt and moving stories, and a deeply personal take on why Mike has been so passionate about this sport of triathlon and the people that are caught up in its spell.

The IRONMAN was by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. The last five miles of the race I actually thought I was gonna die. As I struggled closer to town, I saw the lights and could hear the crowd screaming in the distance. I could hear Mike Reilly faintly, declaring each finisher an IRONMAN.
As I got closer to town and the finish, I could hear Mike’s voice getting louder and louder. The adrenaline was burning thru my body and my veins, my heart was beating out of my chest, and all of the intense pain seemed to go away for a moment as I ran up the ramp crossing the finish line in just over 13 hours. Then I heard the most amazing voice and those unbelievable words, “HINES WARD, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!”
I felt like Rocky Balboa running up the stairs in Philly with my hands up in the air. Like the touchdown pass I caught from Antwan Randle El in Super Bowl XL to win the world championship. It was one of the greatest moments of my life. Never in my wildest dreams...so surreal. I will never forget that moment or those words spoken by a legend in the sport. The great Mike Reilly declared me an IRONMAN. I was so grateful.
